Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Cushion & Aqua Nude FoundationGuerlain Lingerie de Peau Cushion & Aqua Nude Foundation

Guerlain makes some of the most refined and elegant makeup, and wearing a Guerlain foundation is as effortless as slipping on a silky negligee. The original Guerlain Lingerie de Peau revolutionized the beauty world when it was first released in 2011, and won a cult-like following with its skin-fusing formula.  And now, Guerlain is releasing 2 new additions to the line… the first cushion from the brand, and a super lightweight hydrating formula!

Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Cushion & Aqua Nude Foundation

Ever since I showcased this on my Instagram, I’ve been fielding questions from cushion lovers all over the world about the new Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Cushion.  The formula feels similar to the original LdP fluid foundation, of course now in a travel-friendly compact version.  There is no exposed physical cushion, but the foundation is dispensed by gently pressing on the top plate.

Guerlain Lingerie de Peau cushion

For this cushion, Guerlain has enriched its Lingerie de Peau formula with a new hydrating agent to keep skin feeling fresh and soft all day.  It comes with SPF25 protection combined with Vitamin E and antioxidant properties to protect against UV rays and pollution.  Lingerie de Peau Cushion applies smoothly, and has surprisingly good (medium-buildable) coverage.  On my dry skin, it floats over beautifully without emphasizing pores and bumps, and stays imperceptibly lightweight all day long.

As you can see in the comparison image above, Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Cushion evens out my skin tone nicely, and gives a natural glow that moulds to my facial contours like lingerie.  Coverage is a light medium as is usual with the LdP line, but I was surprised by how buildable it is, and capable of effectively concealing the redness around my nose and most of my dark circles (though a corrector underneath would have been even better).  I am using the shade 01N Tres Clair which is close to my natural complexion, but a shade too light in comparison to my neck.  On my dry skin, Lingerie de Peau Cushion lasts well throughout the day without fading or oxidizing, though I could do with a quick touch-up around the t-zone.  This is easy to do with this formula – simply blot off excess oil from the face first, mist if you’d like to refresh, and then pat on a fresh light layer before heading out!

Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Aqua Nude Foundation

If the original LdP was like lingerie on the skin, Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Aqua Nude is akin to bare skin.  The latest Aqua Nude formula is even more watery in texture, and ultra light to wear.  Guerlain uses a new Aqua Pump technology that distributes water evenly in water channels throughout the skin for improved hydration.  This LdP Aqua Nude foundation is composed of volatile oils that lock in pigments in a micro-fine mesh.  This allows it to meld into the skin and adhere to the contours of the face imperceptibly, and leave behind the ultimate bare-skinned finish.  SPF20 provides basic protection from UV rays for mainly indoor wear, but this is one that I would actually wear into the sunny outdoors so additional sunscreen will be needed.

Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Aqua Nude Foundation before after comparison**Please click on image to open in a new window and zoom for closeups

For my dry skin, I found it applies smoothest over a hydrating base.  The formula reminds me of the Dior Nude Air foundation [reviewed here] though not quite as watery and glowy, and a little like the Tom Ford Waterproof Foundation and Concealer [reviewed here] but sheerer.  As you can see from the face comparison image above, the coverage is lighter than the Cushion, and more matte.  The shade I am wearing here is 00N which is much to light and pink for me.  Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Aqua Nude uses a long-wearing polymer that glides onto the contours of the face to protect the make-up from sweat, sebum and water throughout the day.  It is so powerful it is able to stay fresh-looking all day despite insane heat, and even some pool time!

I am a big fan of Guerlain foundations, and continue to be in love with these new Lingerie de Peau offerings.  The shades that I have here are a little light for me, but both are so lightweight and long-lasting that they are make really great choices for those living in hot, humid climates like Singapore.  Even if you are heading into cold winters, your skin will still benefit from the hydrating formulas; and the portability of both the Cushion and Aqua Nude are great for travels.

Both Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Cushion and Lingerie de Peau Aqua Nude are now out in counters.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude & Pure Color Envy Lash Multi Effects MascaraEstee Lauder Double Wear Nude & Pure Color Envy Lash Multi Effects Mascara

Estee Lauder’s Double Wear foundation has been well loved by generations of women before us, and it often gives me a thrill to know that girls are sharing a secret makeup weapon with their moms.  If ever you needed a full coverage foundation that can be relied upon to stay on all day, you would probably have reached for Estee Lauder Double Wear.  The line has seen several extensions over the past few years, and today we are celebrating a completely fresh take on the famed Double Wear… Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude Water Fresh Makeup!

Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude & Pure Color Envy Lash Multi Effects Mascara

The new Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude Makeup offers light to medium coverage that helps even out skin tone whilst allowing the natural skin to show through.  The pigments are wrapped in a flexible polymer that adheres to the curvature of the face, for a comfortable and imperceptible look.  The oil-free formula is non-comedogenic, whilst hyaluronic acid ensures skin is kept hydrated sufficiently so makeup stays fresh all day.  SPF30/PA++ sun protection is also very much welcome.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude Foundation

The bottle design is very similar to the original Double Wear, and I wish Estee Lauder had put in a pump dispenser for convenience and hygiene.  As the foundation is rather runny, the best way to get it out of the bottle is to cover the opening with your fingers, and then quickly tip the bottle over and back upright.  Remember to give it a good shake before using.  This should be sufficient to cover the entire face, and you can layer more as needed.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude Foundation before and after comparison shot**Please click on image to open in a separate window and zoom

Wearing Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude Water Fresh Makeup is like going bare-faced on a good skin day!  It eliminates redness and dark pigmentation with ease, and leaves behind a lovely luminosity that looks fresh.  I am using the shade 2W0 in the comparison photo above, which is a perfect match for me!

Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Lash Multi Effects Mascara

On my light makeup days (I’m almost never completely without because….*makeupjunkie*), I sometimes like to switch gears and play with mascaras instead of full-on eye makeup.  And Estee Lauder just released a whole family of Pure Color Envy Lash Multi Effects Mascara!  These come with an interesting hybrid brush that features longer moulded brush on 1 side and a shorter bristle brush on the other.  One allows for length + separation whilst the latter creates volume + lift.  Apply them all over your lashes, 1 way or both; or just on the tips for a hint of color!

Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Lash Multi Effects Mascara swatches

There are 3 limited edition colors to play with – blue, purple and green.  Of course, there is a jet black which is permanent, and available in both waterproof and non-waterproof versions. And since it is holiday season, there is a fun Crystal Lash Top Coat which features multicoloured glitter suspended in a transparent base.  This can be applied over any mascara, on your lashes or even brows, to add sparkle to your eyes!

Have you tried the new Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude Water Fresh Makeup yet?

La Prairie Skin Caviar Absolute Filler & Concealer FoundationLa Prairie Skin Caviar Absolute Filler & Concealer Foundation

At some point in a beautyjunkie’s life, after you’ve dabbled with a little this and that, there comes a time when the notion of fillers start to dominate.  I’ve been considering several treatments of late, to bring back the youthful cheekbones and sculpted jawline… so imagine my excitement when the latest La Prairie innovation promises to do all that without any poking needles!

La Prairie Skin Caviar Absolute Filler & Concealer Foundation

La Prairie Skin Caviar Absolute Filler is the latest and most luxurious addition to the Skin Caviar Collection.  Designed to return lost density, Absolute Filler seeks to replump and reshape facial contours, to bring back the appearance of youth.  Leveraging on the brand’s exclusive caviar technology, La Prairie Skin Caviar Absolute Filler is the first to use the latest and most advanced form of caviar – the caviar absolute.  Through an innovative refining process, La Prairie has been able to distill a highly concentrated caviar oil and extract the most powerful caviar protein.  In combination, these provide rich nutrients that stimulate collagen formation within the skin.  These are blended with brown algae and peony root extract to improve skin’s texture and elasticity.  Full list of ingredients may be found here.

La Prairie Skin Caviar Absolute Filler

A high-tech cream needs to be able to preserve the integrity of its ingredients, and La Prairie has achieved that with an artfully sculpted dispenser.  A slight dip intuitively beckons the finger, and a gentle push releases the exact dosage for the entire face.  Half doses are also possible by varying the pressure, so nothing is wasted.  The airless pump ensures no contamination of product, so that the actives remain fresh.

La Prairie Skin Caviar Absolute Filler swatch

The Absolute Filler is a lovely silky cream that is easily absorbed and does not leave my face feeling heavy nor greasy.  I don’t feel the need to layer it with anything else, but if you are so inclined, La Prairie recommends pairing it with either the Skin Caviar Luxe Cream or Luxe Cream Sheer for the ultimate luxury.  Apart from the face, Skin Caviar Absolute Filler is also designed to be used on the neck and decollete.  It feels so soothing that my skin practically sighs in relieve, and overnight it appears smoother and firmer.

La Prairie Skin Caviar Concealer Foundation

Apart from being a foundation-junkie, I find the combination of skincare benefits and a luxurious texture to be utterly irresistible.  Infused with caviar extract, the La Prairie Skin Caviar Concealer Foundation offers full coverage with a silky smooth light texture.  I love that it does not contain a trace of silicons, and provides round-the-clock the lifting and firming benefits when used with the rest of the Skin Caviar line.  Full list of ingredients may be found here.

The nifty little bottle cleverly contains a cream concealer under the top lid that is perfectly matched to the foundation within.  I have several cream concealers that I love, and this one may be the best yet!  Used on my underlies, it perfectly hides dark circles without fading, and does not dry up nor emphasize lines as the day progresses.

The top part of the bottle unscrews to reveal an attached spatula to dispense the foundation.  The foundation itself is a lightweight cream that blends out beautifully to even out skin tone, providing perfect coverage to eradicate redness and blemishes.  I am even able to erase most of my dark circles sufficiently that I can skip the concealer if in a hurry.  There is a soft glowy finish that makes my skin look alive and healthy.  La Prairie Skin Caviar Concealer Foundation comes with a silver tray that holds both the bottle and a small concealer brush.  There is also a sponge included, and both the sponge and concealer brush work really well.

La Prairie Skin Caviar Concealer Foundation swatches

There are 3 new shades specially tailored for Asian skin tones, and they are N-20 Pure Ivory, N-30 Satin Nude, and NW-40 Almond Beige.  For your reference, I was wearing N-20 in the half-faced comparison shot above, which is a really good match for me.

There is no better time than the holiday season to pamper yourself or a loved one, and I can’t think of anything more decadent than some La Prairie!

Shiseido Future Solution LX Total Radiance Foundation & Loose PowderShiseido Future Solution LX Total Radiance Foundation & Loose Powder

Hello from Germany!  I’m here on my annual work pilgrimage, which also gives me a nice break away from the usual hustles of life back home.  In between the harried packing preparations for this trip, and the usual jetlag upon arrival, I managed to squeeze time in for a couple of new releases from Shiseido. There isn’t a single release from the brand in the past year that I didn’t enjoy, and I was even more thrilled when I received a package containing a couple of my previous favourite luxury foundation and powder!  Shiseido Future Solution LX is the most luxurious line from the trusted Japanese brand, and leveraging on all the exquisite skincare benefits is the Total Radiance Foundation and Loose Powder.

Shiseido Future Solution LX Total Radiance Foundation & Loose Powder

I have adored Shiseido’s Future Solution LX range for a good part of the past decade, and when the Total Radiance Foundation was first released back in 2014 [reviewed here], I fell in love from the very first use.  It has been a long time since I used up the older version so I cannot quite compare them side-by-side.  Nonetheless, the new Total Radiance Foundation E reminded me right away of all that I had loved and miss so much.

Shiseido Future Solution LX Total Radiance Foundation E

A luxurious experience from the packaging to the texture and finish, Shiseido Future Solution LX Total Radiance Foundation E fuses the best of Japanese skincare with makeup.  It contains Shiseido’s proprietary SkingencellEnmei, a key antiaging ingredient derived by fusing the botanical Enmei herb with Skingenecell 1P (found in the previous formulation) and Vitamin C Ethyl II.  This boosts skin’s natural healing power and suppresses skin-aging. Further, 4MSK helps improve the appearance of dark spots and promotes a more luminous and even skin tone.

Shiseido Future Solution LX Total Radiance Foundation comparisonPlease click on image to open in a separate window & zoom

I found the Total Radiance Foundation E to be incredibly lightweight on my skin for all its amazing benefits.  It blends out amazingly well, and provides full coverage that magically erases my dark circles and the redness around my nose.  On my dehydrated combination skin, it has a satin finish and keeps my t-zone matte for a good 8 hours.  Thereafter, it starts to become a bit more velvety but not overly shiny.

Shiseido Future Solution LX Total Radiance Loose Powder E

Accompanying the foundation, Shiseido has also reformulated the Future Solution LX Total Radiance Loose Powder E.  This is an ultra-fine, super smooth and hydrating powder that mattifies and helps set makeup without emphasizing lines and wrinkles.  It contains an exclusive botanical blend of Japanese herbs that helps prevent free radical damage, and also maintain moisture levels.  There is a super plush, soft and smooth puff included in the jar, which is very useful for pressing and dusting the Total Radiance Loose Powder E all over the face.

My skin has been so dry and flaky ever since I got to Germany, and I’m so grateful to have Shiseido Future Solution LX Total Radiance Foundation E in my life.  It is definitely a daily staple for me now!  And the Loose Powder E is definitely one of the best powder I’ve ever used!

When was the last time you fell in love with a foundation or powder and which was it??  Tell me, I want to know!

Chanel Le Blanc Dernieres Neiges Collection

Chanel Le Blanc Dernieres Neiges collectionChanel Le Blanc Dernieres Neiges collection

Chanel is killing it this spring!!  The Neapolis Collection [reviews start from here] is so bold and fresh, although I know some people found it a little overwhelming when it is still covered in snow outside.  If that is the case for you, then you will certainly enjoy the new Dernieres Neiges de Chanel Collection!  This is a capsule collection of makeup that is part of the annual spring Le Blanc release.  Originally designed to target the Asian market, Chanel has now made the range accessible globally, though still in keeping with the Asian aesthetic of soft pearly pastels for a youthful luminous look.

Chanel Le Blanc Dernieres Neiges collection

If you have been perusing Instagram lately, you would have seen the museum-worthy collectible piece.  Chanel Premieres Fleurs Harmony of Powders is a trio of blushes and highlighter bearing an exquisite oriental design.  The design is a replication the older Coromandel de Chanel eyeshadow/blush palette from 2005 [view on my Instagram here], and is inspired by a coromanel screen that used to reside in Gabrielle Chanel’s apartment.

Chanel Premiere Fleurs Harmony of Powders

This season’s release is soft and ethereal, and the design is emphasized by a light gold overspray that dusts off with the first use.  It contains a pearly white highlighter that is semi-sheer in the base but filled with champagne gold micro-shimmers, suitable as a highlighter on its own or mixed into the other shades for a luminous finish.  At the bottom of the palette is a medium-light coral pink blush with a slight golden pearl.  In the middle is a thin strip of pale pinky-beige filled with golden shimmers.  I have swatched all the shades below without the golden overspray so that you can get an accurate view of the product.

Chanel Premiere Fleurs Harmony of Powders swatches

Premieres Fleurs warms up the frost-bitten complexion lightly, and the touch of luminosity gives that blossoming spring beauty.  You can use it on the cheeks, or mixed in for an all-over glow, even as a light sculpting touch.  Of course, you may not bear to touch it at all, given how incredibly pretty the design is.

If you would rather invest in something that you can actually bear to use, you may want to consider the Palette Essentielle Rose Petale (180).  First introduced last fall [see here], Chanel’s Palette Essentielle is a 3-in-1 cream palette that contains a blush, concealer and highlighter.

Chanel Palette Essentielle Rose Petale

This spring’s Rose Petale approximates Beige Claire in intensity, but with a stronger pink undertone.  When swatched, the shades are surprisingly close to Premieres Fleurs, though with different finishes.  The blush is pinker though with a golden pearl finish; and the highlighter pulls a light champagne against my complexion even though it looks white in the pan.  The larger section of the palette is dedicated to a light concealer with a brightening pink undertone which is useful for freshening up dark spots.  If you had been curious about the Palette Essentielles but found the 3 permanent shades too yellow or simply not a good match, you should definitely check Rose Petale out.

Chanel Palette Essentielle Rose Petale swatches

For a bit more colour on the cheeks, Chanel has a new shade of Les Tissages Blush in Tweed Evanescent (130).  As always, there is a hint of silver woven into the blush for that tweed-like effect, but it does not affect the underlying blush colour.  I often get asked about the quality of these blushes in comparison with the more prevalent Joues Contraste blushes, and the answer is that they are equally good.  From the past few releases, I found the Les Tissages blushes to be more pigmented and shimmery than the Joues Contrastes.

Chanel Les Tissages Tweed Evanescent

Tweed Evanescent is a brightened coral pink with a sprinkling of pale pink and gold shimmers.  It is much more pigmented than the other 2 cheek palettes discussed above, and it blends out into a beautiful fresh flush.

Chanel Les Tissages Tweed Evanescent swatch

Apart from the cheeks, Chanel has also released a Les 4 Ombres Premiere Eclosion (302) alongside this collection.

Chanel Les 4 Ombres Premiere Eclosion

I’m a big fan of Chanel’s multi-effect quadra eyeshadow formula, and find myself collecting every single one of them year after year.  Premiere Eclosion is the first time I am seeing a mint green from Chanel, and I am super excited.

Chanel Les 4 Ombres Premiere Eclosion swatches

In clockwise direction starting from the top left, the shades are:

  1. Light mint green with a pearl finish and a sprinkle of pale champagne micro-shimmers.  This shade has surprisingly good pigmentation, and I love wearing it either in the water line or inner corner to brighten the eye area.
  2. Light peach with a satin finish and some pale champagne micro-shimmers.  This shade layers beautifully with the other shades… it’s magical.
  3. Medium taupe brown with a satin finish and pale golden micro-shimmers.  A standard well-loved workhorse that wears well on its own or in combination with the others.
  4. Medium-dark plummy brown with a matte finish and some sparse purple micro-shimmers.  This shade looks purple in the pan but applies more brown on my skin tone, so that’s definitely something to watch out for.  It is not the smoothest matte ever, but it applies beautifully with a brush to deepen and define.

Chanel eyeshadows are seldom raved for their ability to layer, and certainly I do not expect the complexity of shimmers that I can achieve with Japanese brands like SUQQU.  Regardless, their soft textures and the combination of intensities render Premiere Eclosion well suited for layering.  Check out the beautiful neutrals that result from mixing the shades together!

Chanel Les 4 Ombres Premiere Eclosion blended swatches

For a simple eye look, I started with the medium taupe all over the lid, then I added the light peach on two-thirds of the lid.  Next, I lined both upper and lower lash lines with the plummy brown, blending upwards and outwards  Lastly, I popped the mint green on the inner corner using a pencil brush, and finished with mascara.

Chanel Les 4 Ombres Premiere Eclosion eye look

There are a couple of Ombre Premiere eyeshadow singles and several lip options in the Dernieres Neiges Collection as well, so there is plenty enough to explore.  Here is a full makeup look featuring Premier Eclosion on the eyes, and Tweed Evanescent on the cheeks.  On the lips, I am wearing Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Marc Liquid Lip Crayon in Pink Straight [reviewed here].

Chanel Le Blanc Dernieres Neiges makeup look

Have you picked up anything from the Dernieres Neiges de Chanel Collection?  I am taking my 5yo son for a cruise this weekend, he has been waiting to get on a ship for a very long time, so it should be fun!  Do you have anything planned?

As part of a series of new additions to the Le Blanc range, Chanel recently released an innovative compact foundation which marries skincare benefits with makeup expertise.  The Chanel Le Blanc Oil-in-Cream Compact Foundation is a new generation cream compact foundation that is unlike anything I have ever tried.  Just like the Les Beiges Gel Touch Foundation [reviewed here], I am completely in love!

Chanel Le Blanc Oil in Cream Compact Foundation

The Chanel Le Blanc Oil-in-Cream Compact Foundation is infused with the ume flower oil which is able to stimulate skin repair, brighten and boost moisture level.  It comes in a round “cushion” format that has a swing lid that snaps shut over the product to keep it from drying out, and a luxuriously smooth and plush sponge.  The product looks like a cushion, but is actually a lightweight silky cream that transforms into the texture of oil once it touches skin.  Formulated with a Smart Thermal Complex, the Oil-in-Cream Compact Foundation feels cool and crisp on the skin, and maintains a “buffer” throughout the day, protecting the skin from extreme changes of temperature and humidity.  I especially appreciate that it comes with SPF40 / PA++ sun protection.

Chanel Le Blanc Oil in Cream Compact Foundation before after effects

Coverage is light-medium though slightly buildable.  It evens out skin tone beautifully, giving a luminous glow that lasts all day.  I  love how it smoothens out my pores and gives my skin a porcelain-like finish.  For stubborn spots, extreme dark circles and redness around the nose, I still require a separate concealer.  On my dry combination skin, Chanel Le Blanc Oil-in-Cream Compact Foundation stays on well all day without fading or oxidizing, though it does get a little shiny after 5 hours’ wear around the t-zone, but far superior to any other cream foundation I have ever tried.

The texture is so comforting on my skin, it is truly unique and unlike anything I have ever tried.  There are 6 shades available, and 20 Beige suits me perfectly.

5 Foundations to explore this year!

$
0

Do you change up your routine at the start of each year or season?  Apart from switching up my skincare and color makeup, I also like to update my base makeup to suit my skin condition.  And as we head into March, here are 5 foundations that I have on rotation for the past couple of months.  Even though there are always new releases every season, these 5 have been around for awhile now, and you may even have tried them yourself.  I have picked a range here to suit all skin types and coverage preferences, so hopefully there you will discover some gems today.

The all-rounder: Make Up Store Sculpt Excellence

Make Up Store is a greatly underrated brand with an extensive range of high quality products.  The Sculpt Excellence foundation is one such product that I have really enjoyed.  The only downside to it is the lack of a pump dispenser, but uses a flat spatula applicator instead.  So I usually place an amount on the back of my hand and then return the spatula straight back into the bottle, and then apply with a brush or sponge onto my face.

Make Up Store Sculpt Excellence Foundation

The Make Up Store Sculpt Excellence is a full coverage foundation that nicely balances the intense pigmentation with a light and easy to blend texture.  I have dry skin and often experience flaking, but a combination and acne-prone condition, so I generally prefer lighter foundations.  Despite that, I found myself really enjoying Sculpt Excellence on days when I need a bit more coverage for my red patches.  Instead of applying it directly to my skin, I sheer it out with a dampened sponge, and then pat on more wherever it is needed.

Make Up Store Sculpt Excellence Foundation before after comparison

As you can see from the half-faced comparison shot above, Make Up Store Sculpt Excellence has completely eradicated my dark circles and the redness around my nose.  The finish is a lovely glowy satin that looks natural and dimensional not flat.  There is a good range of shades, especially yellow-toned ones to suit Asian skin.  I am using the shade Cookie here which is a perfect match for me.

For everyday wear: THREE Flawless Ethereal Fluid Foundation

THREE Flawless Ethereal Fluid Foundation

THREE is a relatively new entrant to Singapore, but the Japanese brand has a cult-like following, and the Flawless Ethereal Fluid Foundation is one of the best-loved products from the brand.  With a philosophy focusing on living beautifully, THREE products are formulated without parabens, synthetic perfumes, animal-derived ingredients, and mineral oils.  As with most Japanese makeup, there is a high SPF36/PA+++ sun protection to keep skin looking younger.

THREE Flawless Ethereal Fluid Foundation before after comparison

Apart from providing good coverage for everyday use, THREE Flawless Ethereal Fluid Foundation contains botanical oils that meld with the skin for a beautiful luster.  The texture is incredibly smooth and light, and coverage is a good medium and buildable.  Because of the oil content in this foundation, those with oily skin may have a problem with it.  Personally, I did not experience any breakouts but I do find shine creeping up on my t-zone after about 5-6 hours’ wear.

For extra-coverage days: Clarins Skin Illusion Natural Radiance Foundation

Clarins Skin Illusion Foundation

Coming from a skincare brand, Clarins Skin Illusion Natural Radiance Foundation naturally contains skin-loving ingredients such as pink algae and other vegetal extracts to boost hydration and skin health.  It gives a medium coverage which can be sheered out or built up as needed.  Light-Optimizing+ Complex and Pink Opal Pigments give a brightening effect to the skin.

Clarins Skin Illusion Foundation before after comparison

This is a slightly thicker fluid foundation that envelops the skin like a cream, and on my dry skin I found it easier to blend with a dampened brush or sponge.  The finish is quite matte, and is probably the most matte of the 5 foundations featured here today.

For sheer, luminous coverage: Lancôme Teint Miracle Foundation

Lancome Teint Miracle

Lancôme’s best-selling foundation was recently upgraded with Universal Light Technology to mirror the natural glow that radiates when skin is under day light.  Formulated with 40% water and reinforced with vegetal glycerin and hyaluronic acid, Lancôme Teint Miracle keeps skin hydrated and prevents lines from forming.  At the same time, the foundation has sebum-absorbing properties to keep from caking up on oily/combination skin.  Rose Extract soothes skin inflammation and nourishes skin, whilst Moringa enhances skin firmness & fights free radicals.

Lancome Teint Miracle Foundation before after comparison

Lancôme Teint Miracle Foundation is lightest in texture of all the 5 foundations discussed today, and is incredibly comfortable to wear.  Regardless, it provides medium coverage that is buildable to a certain extent.  For me, it adequately covers my dark circles and the redness around my nose, but a separate concealer is still needed if I wanted to completely eradicate them.  I love the natural my-skin-but-better glow this foundation provides, and it veils the appearance of pores and lines imperceptibly.

For a matte finish: Kanebo Full Radiance Foundation

Kanebo Full Radiance Foundation

Kanebo relaunched the entire brand’s line-up and the makeup range has been reformulated to reflect the skincare philosophy of “chrono-beauty”, which is adapting ingredients according to skin’s differing day/night requirements.  I can always count on the Japanese brands to create shades that flatter Asian skin tones, and Kanebo’s Full Radiance Foundation gives skin a luminosity and does not turn me ashen.

Kanebo Full Radiance Foundation before after comparison

Kanebo’s Full Radiance Foundation is a full coverage foundation with a matte finish that still manages to retain a natural glow.  It completely erases my dark circles and other skin tone unevenness, and still manages to float over my pores smoothly.  As with all full coverage foundations, it does stick to dry flaky skin, but minimally so, and can be better alleviated by hydrating well beforehand.

That’s it, 5 very different, yet individually excellent foundations to explore!  It is easy to get distracted by newer releases, and it has taken me a long time to get this post up for you.  But if you are a foundation junkie like me, it is more fun than work.  Enjoy!

The New Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation

Lancome Teint Idole Ultra FoundationLancome Teint Idole Ultra Foundation

Lancome reformulated several of its foundations last year, and the most hyped was perhaps the Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation.  This is one of the brand’s top-selling foundations best known for its matte finish and long-lasting wear.  It is perhaps diametrically different from the much more hydrating and dewy Teint Miracle Foundation [reviewed here], and is better suited for those prone to shine.  I had tested this out more than 4 years ago when it was first launched, and found the new version to be much improved!

Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Foundation

The new Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation has been reformulated to ensure all-day comfort for long-lasting wear.  The pigments are specially coated to maintain a pH level that is at equilibrium with the skin to ensure that color stays true.  The bottle has been updated to bear a shiny black cap with a golden emblem on the top, to make it even more modern and edgy looking.  But what is most impressive is the extensive range of 40 shades to suit every skin tone!

I was matched to the shade O25, which is really the perfect shade for me!  As you can see in the half-faced comparison shot below, Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation floats over surface imperfections and evens out skin tone beautifully, leaving a porcelain-smooth and lit-from-within complexion.  The texture is very much improved from the earlier version [reviewed here], it is a light fluid that I found super easy to blend, and yet not so runny it makes a mess.  It dries down fairly quickly after application, and gives a beautiful luminous satin finish.  This is also in sharp contrast to the original version which was much more matte and flat.

Coverage is a good buildable medium, and is also easy to sheer out with a dampened sponge or brush.  I actually prefer my foundations sheerer, and was surprised by how effortless this looks without leaving my face looking cakey and feeling heavy.  I was able to cover up dark circles and the redness around my nose sufficiently with this Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation alone, but acne scars require a separate concealer to cover completely.

With regards to the 24h claims, I must note that on my dry/combination skin, this Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation does get shiny around my t-zone after about 6 hours’ wear.  It does not get too severe though, and I can get by without blotting.  At the same time, there is not too much transfer and I did not notice any creasing nor oxidising of the foundation throughout the day.

The gorgeous finish and comfortable lightweight wear make this Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation a truly outstanding product.  If you looking to switch up your makeup in anticipation of warmer weather ahead, I highly recommend you take a look at this!

Clarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation

Clarins Everlasting Cushion FoundationClarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation

I’ve been a little distracted lately… and have been wondering if I have the capacity to continue maintaining this blog.  It is not even about redirecting my efforts to other social media platforms, I think I need to just focus on doing me for a bit.  I had the crappiest Mothers’ Day because my husband wrecked my brand new car; and broke my wrist by slamming it against a window frame.  Tip of the iceberg, but looming in the horizon for a while now.  This blog began as an avenue for me to define myself as more than just a mother and wife at home, and beyond just another employee at work.  Lately however, I find myself struggling to keep up with the pipeline, and having to dig deep to find enthusiasm and joy in the latest and bestest.  The question is, what do we do when the passion is gone?

An unexpectedly heavy introduction to what should be an easy read, my apologies for that.  But let’s say that I’m not ready yet to let go entirely, so I will take this as a nice distraction for as long as I can.  So humor me, dear readers, with some emotional verbage and not-so-philosophical discourse from time to time.  In return, I will aspire to do justice to some products that still manage to impress me in spite of it all.  Today, I have the pleasure of introducing the latest Western-branded cushion that has found its place squarely in my daily routine – the Clarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation!

Clarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation

We all have those days when we just don’t feel like applying, buffing and blending our foundation to perfection.  Lately, I’ve been waking up to those days quite a bit.  And the easiest solution is simply pick up a cushion and pat it on.  My weapon of choice is the Clarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation.  High coverage, natural glowy finish, and feels comfortable like second-skin.  It even comes with SPF 50 PA+++ sun protection and an anti-pollution complex to keep skin from premature aging… what’s not to love?

Clarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation

The all white packaging, complete with reflective silver trimmings, is chic and irresistibly cool.  Everything from the bouncy puff applicator to the swing lid that closes securely over the cushion to keep it from drying out, feels as well made as it should be.  Coming from the skincare experts, Clarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation boasts 24-hour non-stop hydration, to keep even the most dehydrated skin looking plump and smooth.

Clarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation before after comparison**Please click to open in a separate window where you can enlarge and zoom for comparison

The above half-faced comparison gives you a good idea of how well the Clarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation conceals dark circles and the redness around my nose.  It also gives a luminous glow that instantly brightens up my complexion.  On my combination skin though, it does get a little too shiny after mid-day, so I need a good anti-shine primer on my t-zone and blot in the afternoon.  Regardless, this cushion did not fade nor oxidise on me at all, and lasts well throughout my long 18-hour days.  If you are using this in a drier climate or have dry skin in general, you will enjoy this to its fullest potential.  The shade that I am using here is 108 Sand, which suits me perfectly.

Now as I’m typing this, I’m staring at a rubber cockroach that my son had sneaked into my purse this morning.  It gave me a good scare the first time I saw it, but has since evolved into our private joke of sorts.  I think I shall go throw it at my colleague for some laughs… it’s the little things that matter these days.

So Shameless, Marc Jacobs Beauty

Marc Jacobs Beauty Shameless FoundationMarc Jacobs Beauty Shameless Foundation

I love a good lightweight foundation that allows the natural skin to show through, and Marc Jacobs Beauty claims to do all of that with its latest Shameless Foundation.  Billed to have skin-loving properties and a 24-hour stay, it sounded like a dream come true.  I had the privilege of experiencing the foundation at an intimate workshop with the brand’s Global Makeup Artist Gilbert Soliz a couple of months ago, but did not receive a sample in my shade until very recently.  I finally got the chance to give it a couple of good test runs through the rigors of my usual long work days, and would like to share my thoughts with you today.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Shameless Foundation

Marc Jacobs Beauty Shameless Foundation is inspired by the designer’s own unapologetic attitude, and reminds us all to be proud of our own skin.  It is designed to feel fresh on the skin, and allow the natural radiance and texture of skin to show through.  The formula contains snow mushroom to help skin retain moisture, and blue daisy extract to counter the dulling effects of pollution.  What is truly unique is that Marc Jacobs Beauty is the first to market an encapsulated SPF to prevent flashbacks during photography and does not turn complexions ashy.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Shameless Foundation

The bottles are made of lightweight plastic and their slim design make them perfect for travels.  I like the fuss-free squeeze nozzle dispensers that allow me to calibrate the dosage that I need easily.

There are 29 shade to choose from, with a good mix of pink- (marked with R) and yellow-based (marked with Y) undertones.  I played around with a few during the workshop and found Y270 was the best match for me.  In general, the pink-toned shades were much too pink for me, but I also found the shades to vary significantly even within the colour families.  You can see from the swatches above that Y210 is markedly less golden than Y270 even though it is the next shade down within the Y-family (there are 2 other shades R230 & R250 between).

I received 4 samples from Marc Jacobs Beauty, unfortunately none of them were my ideal match.  I swatched them side by side here for your reference, unfortunately it is not the same lighting as the workshop swatches, but I still hope they still give you an idea of how the shades vary.  I was surprised that R300 turned out more golden than Y320 which was more pink.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Shameless Foundation before after comparison**Please click on image to enlarge and zoom

Since the closest shade that I have is R300, I tried it on anyway, and found the formula sheer enough that it blends out imperceptibly.  The formula is very light and runny, and it sets rather quickly, so I recommend working in small sections at a time and working quickly.  I have heard people complaining about difficulties applying this foundation, but I personally did not encounter any challenges.  I have dry dehydrated skin so I always ensure my skin is well moisturized before applying makeup.

Marc Jacobs Beauty The Seamless brush

My usual way of applying foundation is with a damp beauty blender, which works really well with the Shameless Foundation, though it does sheer it out even more.  Marc Jacobs Beauty has designed The Seamless Brush to be the perfect companion, and it does apply The Shameless Foundation beautifully.  I really love the soft, dense head of The Seamless Brush (it is even softer than some natural fibre foundation brushes I own!), and the synthetic bristles are easy to clean.  The brush is wider and thicker than most other flat paddle-head foundation brushes, which makes it faster to work with, and blends out better.

I know some people faced longevity issues with The Shameless Foundation, but surprisingly I found it lasted decently well throughout my 12-hour days.  There is noticeable shine on my t-zone as is usual with most of my foundations, but I did not experience any oxidization, fading, nor patchiness.  Again, I think a lot of this has to do with ensuring your skin is well moisturized prior to makeup.  [If you need recommendations for some new summer hydration, please check out my favorites here.]

Overall, I liked The Shameless Foundation much better than the older Genius Gel Foundation [reviewed here].  The easy-to-travel packaging is also a huge bonus for those packing for a summer vacation.  I am crazy in love with The Seamless Brush, which I have used with other foundations and cream blushes also with great success.

My skin has been simply flawless lately (now, if that’s not a boastful statement I don’t know what is!), and it is all thanks to the new La Prairie Skin Caviar Essence-in-Foundation!  For the first time, La Prairie has incorporated its very exclusive Caviar Water in a start-of-the-art delivery system to create a colour/skincare product to pamper and refine.

La Prairie Skin Caviar Essence-in-Foundation

The slim round compact is dressed in the brand’s signature midnight blue and reflective silver cap.  Inside, is an innovative net-diffusing system that dispenses the product only when pressed, ensuring the rest of the product remain sealed from light and air.  It is so sleek and feels luxurious without compromising on portability and practicality.

La Prairie Essence-in-Foundation

La Prairie Skin Caviar Essence-in-Foundation contains Caviar Water, a pure distillate that contains the most delicate and essential elements of caviar that provides skin with lifting and firming benefits.  It is combined with the brand’s exclusive Cellular Complex to re-energize skin cells.  A full list of ingredients may be found here.  Blended with soft-focus pigments, the Skin Caviar Essence-in-Foundation is silky smooth, and lightweight on the skin.  A single press on the net-diffusing system dispenses enough product for a light-medium coverage all across the face.  I found it easy to build up the coverage to a full medium simply by patting more product over areas where it is needed.

When worn on its own, I found La Prairie Skin Caviar Essence-in-Foundation to leave a glowy finish.  Personally, I prefer to matte things down with a light dusting of powder, and I also wear an oil-control primer underneath on my t-zone to ensure my makeup lasts the day.  Regardless, I still need to blot and touch up if am heading out after work.

In any case, I love the smooth, porcelain finish the Skin Caviar Essence-in-Foundation gives me.  There is a brightening luminosity that makes me look more awake than I feel.  More importantly, or perhaps I am hallucinating, my skin has been in much better condition than it has ever been!  I don’t come home to fresh zits and clogged pores, which counts for a lot.

I love Nudestix for their intuitive-to-use pencil makeup format, and the incredible ability to carry all my makeup needs in a single sleek tin.  That means no round cushion nor powder compact, nor messy liquid foundation to clutter up my purse.  Now with the Nudies Tinted Blur the dream is finally reality.

Nudestix Nudies Tinted Blur

Nudestix’s Nudies Tinted Blur comes in a chubby twist-up pencil, and features a cream-to-powder formula.  To apply, simply swipe on the face and blend with finger/brush/sponge.  With the marketing tag of #gonudebutbetter, the Tinted Blur gives a sheer, lightweight coverage.  It is so sheer that coverage does not even quite capture the essence of the Tinted Blur… instead it blurs pores, smoothens the texture of the face imperceptibly, and evens out skin tone.  It reminds me of a combination of those pore-perfecting primers and setting powder in a handy singular product.

Nudestix Nudies Tinted Blur half faced comparison**Click on image to open in separate window and zoom

As you can see from the half-faced comparison shot above, the Nudestix Nudies Tinted Blur magically erased my dark circles, tough it did not completely conceal the redness around my nose.  Needless to say, any major imperfections and zits would still require a concealer.  What is really lovely is how natural the skin looks, as Tinted Blur allows the real skin to still show through.  The finish is soft and velvety, very modern and chic, perfect for everyday wear.

There are 10 shades currently available, but they meld so well into the skin that it should not be difficult to find a match.  Of course, apart from using the Tinted Blur as base color, it can also be to highlight and contour.  I actually really like the texture for contouring, easy to blend and sheer enough that it is unobtrusive, with the perfect matte finish.  Ingredients may be found here.

Nudestix Nudies Tinted Blur is out at Sephora now.  Will you be checking it out?

Show off Your Skin’s Natural Beauty this Summer 2018 with THREE Angelic Synthesis Foundation Serum!

THREE Summer 2018 makeupTHREE Summer 2018 makeup

Happy Monday!  The lovely folks at THREE Cosmetics in Singapore sent me a wonderful package last month, and I’ve been waiting to share it with you.  THREE Cosmetics is a lifestyle brand from Japan which prides itself on a holistic approach towards beauty and living.  The range is almost exclusively sold in Japan, and so it was a major coup when it launched in Singapore last year.  I had reviewed several pieces from their makeup line in the past [see here], and am excited to explore their latest base products and several pieces from their Summer 2018 point makeup range.

THREE Summer 2018 makeup

Summer is always about carefree ease and natural beauty, so it is timely for THREE Cosmetics to launch its latest Angelic Synthesis Foundation Serum.  This is a lightweight foundation that leaves the skin feeling perfectly comfortable and looking flawlessly natural.  Interestingly, the texture is not drippy but feels almost mousse-like despite being dispensed via a dropper.  However, it applies incredibly smoothly with an airy feel, and sets and becomes budge-proof within minutes.

THREE Angelic Synthesis Foundation Serum is formulated with 83% naturally-derived ingredients, and contains 9 beneficial botanical extracts.  This includes Geranium Robertianum extract (a potent antioxidant), Lactobacillus casei/Fermented pear juice (regulates skin chemistry to encourage healthy barrier function), Borage oil (anti-inflammation), Sea buckthorn oil (healing), Tea seed oil, Argan oil, Jojoba oil, Shea butter, and Beeswax.  Full ingredient list here.

THREE Angelic Synthesis Foundation Serum before after**Feel free to click on image to open up in a separate window and zoom!

I received the shade 202 which looked somewhat dark to me initially, but blends out to lend a brightening effect as you can see in the half-faced comparison shot above.  It sufficiently brightens up my undereye and conceals the redness around my nose, but if you have severe pigmentaion and scars a separate concealer will still be needed.  When first applied, the finish is velvety and luminous, but after a couple of hours, my skin’s natural oils start to permeate, and I do notice some shine creeping up my t-zone by midday.  The foundation itself does not break down nor oxidise though, and I’ve been able to wear it all day.

THREE Angelic Synthesis Foundation Serum, Ultimate Diaphanous Loose Powder, Airlift Smoothing Wand

To help keep the shine away, there is THREE Ultimate Diaphanous Loose Powder in a new matte version.  Incredibly fine and airy, a loose dusting of this powder completely matinees the complexion and sets makeup.  It comes with a luxurious thick puff that feels like being kissed by a baby.  Or if you prefer, just gently dip your brush into the bouncy mesh, tap off any excess powder and swirl on the face.  Full ingredients here.

For me, I’ve always been plagued by wrinkles around the inner corner of my eye, along the nose bridge, from rubbing and scratching in my childhood.  Foundations tend to sink into the  lines and emphasis them.  For these and any other facial lines, THREE has released the innovative Airlift Smoothing Wand.  It comes in a slim concealer type wand and a creamy balm-like texture.  A single swipe immediately veils the appearance of lines and wrinkles, without leaving any trace on the skin.  Ingredients here.

THREE Atmospheric Definition Mascara

Apart from the base makeup, THREE has also released a few point makeup items for Summer 2018.  For the eyes, achieve an easy elegant look with THREE Atmospheric Definition Mascara.  With a fluffy curved brush, the mascara is able to grab hold of individual lashes and coat them with a light layer of fiber to lengthen naturally.  It does not clump nor weighs down the lashes.  Personally, I prefer my lashes much more voluminous and darker, and the Japanese aesthetic in this regard errs on the side of conservatism.

THREE Captivating Performance Fluid Eyeliner

To complement the natural effortless look, you can try the THREE Captivating Performance Fluid Eyeliner, which is a click pen-type liquid liner.  The brush tip has a nice flick and is thin enough for a fine tip.  However I found that the capillary action does not fully deliver the liner to the very tip of the brush, but ends up splitting the hairs.  The 2 shades that I have are not very intense in pigmentation, so I needed several passes to get a fully opaque line, which invariably made it feather.  I must say though that the shades are interesting alternatives to the usual black / brown.

Here are arm swatches of the mascara and eyeliners:

THREE Captivating Performance Fluid eyeliner & Atmospheric Definition mascara swatches

Finally, for an easy and comfortable way to wear a lip colour, THREE offers the Shimmering Lip Jam.  These have a jelly-like texture to them, and offer a natural-glossy finish to the lips with just a tint of colour.  They contain cherry extract and several botanical oils to hydrate and protect the lips.  The applicator is curved like a little spoon to pick up the product and applies evenly across the lips.

THREE Shimmering Lip Jam swatches

Overall, the base makeup items are interesting and definitely worth checking out.  The other items are nice additions to my existing collection of colour makeup, but probably not crucial. If you are in Singapore, definitely stop by the store at Level 4 at TANGS Orchard where the first Rhythmic Spa outside of Japan has been set up, or check out the counter at Takashimaya Department Store.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Flawless Hydrating Primer & Maximum Cover FoundationEstee Lauder Double Wear Flawless Hydrating Primer & Maximum Cover Foundation

Whenever I think of fool-proof makeup that lasts and provides complete coverage, I think of Estee Lauder’s famed Double Wear foundation.  If you thought that was the last word on the subject, Estee Lauder now ups the ante with a new Maximum Cover Foundation!  And as we head into the cooler and drier season ahead, you might also want to check out the new Flawless Hydrating Primer.  Read more after the jump!

Estee Lauder Double Wear Flawless Hydrating Primer & Maximum Cover Foundation

Estee Lauder Double Wear Maximum Cover Foundation is a thick creamy foundation that is so pigmented it can cover scars, sun spots, birthmarks, even tattoos and varicose veins!  A tiny pea-sized bit is all I need to cover my entire face!  Although it feels quite thick initially, it is relatively easy to blend.  I like to use a damp sponge or beauty blender and just dab at it.  This way I can cover my entire face in a matter of seconds, and it leaves a more natural finish.  Then for the more problematic spots that require greater coverage, I layer on more of the Maximum Cover Foundation with a concealer brush.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Maximum Cover Foundation before after comparison**Please click on image to enlarge and zoom

Unlike the classic Double Wear Stay-in-Place, the Maximum Cover Foundation is not as creamy, and adheres better to the face like a veil.  On my skin, it feels lighter and more comfortable despite affording greater coverage.  No matter how hot the day gets, Estee Lauder Double Wear Maximum Cover never creases nor fades.  I hardly notice any shine on my t-zone at the end of a long day, although my makeup does look slightly less matte and even more skin like.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Flawless Hydrating Primer & Maximum Cover Foundation swatches

For those with very dry skin, I recommend properly hydrating your skin before using the Maximum Cover Foundation for the ultimate smooth finish.  And to help you achieve this, Estee Lauder introduced the Flawless Hydrating Primer.  This is a multi-tasking hydrating primer with high SPF45 to protect skin against broad-spectrum UV rays and pollution.  It has a light fluid texture and it glides effortlessly over the face to create smooth even canvas for makeup application.  This is the first primer Estee Lauder ever designed to specifically pair with Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup, though it works just as beautifully with any other Estee Lauder foundations.

With these new launches, Estee Lauder has a complete foundation wardrobe to cater to each and every skin type and need.  I have reviewed most of them over the years – check them out here.  Do you have a favourite?

Foundations are intended to perfect our complexions, but in order to capture that perfect selfie on camera, By Terry has introduced the most forward-thinking foundation product to date.

By Terry Nude-Expert Duo Stick

Housed in a convenient pocket-sized tube, By Terry Nude-Expert Duo Stick is perfect for application on the go and allows for touch-ups so that you are always ready for spontaneous photography.  The stick twists up and down, and contains a satin matte foundation on one half, and a luminous highlighter on the other side.  There is even a blending sponge built into the opposite end of the stick so flawlessness is no longer an illusion.

By Terry Nude-Expert Duo Stick swatches

Swiping the flattened tip across the skin results in equal parts of foundation and highlighter applied, leaving a glowy, porcelain-like finish.  There is of course the option of using only the foundation or highlighter sides for a more matte base and to sculpt the high points of the face.  Whichever side you choose, the formula is silky and easy to apply, and feels virtually weightless on the skin.  This is the lightest foundation I have ever tried, and yet provides a surprisingly good buildable coverage.  Formulated with an Intensive Mimetic Camouflage Technology, the By Terry Nude-Expert Duo Stick has built-in filter-like correcting prisms and light micro-sensors to reflect skin’s radiance.  Spherical pixel-focus powder pigments blur fine lines and wrinkles to give skin a smooth appearance.  There are currently 7 shades available in the range, and I have swatched 5 of them above.  Shade No. 2.5 Nude Light is a good match for my roughly NC25 complexion.

By Terry Nude-Expert Duo Stick before after comparison**Click on image to open in a separate window and zoom in

As you can see from the half-faced comparison shot above, By Terry Nude-Expert Duo Stick provides light-buildable coverage.  It evens out skin tone nicely, concealing the redness around my nose and brightening the dark patches around my lips.  I still need a separate concealer for my dark circles and acne spots.  The picture does not fully capture the beautiful glow, though you can make out the brightening effects as captured here.

Surprisingly, for such a lightweight cream product, the By Terry Nude-Expert Duo Stick stays in place all day, does not smudge, stain nor streak even after running around all day.  It retails for SGD78, and is available at Escentials in Singapore and online.

Rounding off 2018 with a load of empties

Empties vol. 09Empties vol. 09

Hello 2019! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday with your family and loved ones. My son started primary school yesterday, which is a new milestone for him and a whole new change for the entire household as we all have to adapt to his new schedule. In previous years I’ve made resolutions relating to (buying less) makeup and (doing more) social media, but this year I find my interests straying in a whole new direction. I’d like to commit to living more in the moment, finding new experiences and hopefully having more memorable vacations with my son. I may be back home but my heart and mind are still tethered to that glorious week spent in the Maldives, and in case you hadn’t seen our videos yet, please do subscribe and check out Ezra’s youtube channel here (shameless plug!).

It may seem odd to kick off the year with an empties post, but there is an immense sense of achievement when I am able to properly bin a bunch of products without a sense of waste, and to memorialise them here on my blog. 2019 had seen the launch of many brands in Singapore, not all of them new in the world, but they certainly took their time. There wasn’t anything earth-shatteringly innovative that I’d seen, and personally am feeling a little tired by many brands, with the exception of Chanel which keeps growing stronger with every season. As such, I find it difficult to select “bests” or “worsts” for the year, instead I go back to my staples many of which are perennial favourites as you will find out below.

Empties vol. 09

I go through hair and body products at a regular clip, so I often start my empties post there.  Unfortunately, makeup takes me far longer, and even though I started the year with the hopes of panning some powder, that target proved elusive as I switch up my eyeshadows with every season and I’ve been putting my cream products on rotation more often in an effort to prevent them from turning bad before I can make a dent. Regardless, I still managed to empty out a good dozen of makeup products over the year, and here is the star of the lot which I plan on replacing the next time I find myself shopping for a foundation.

Makeup

  1. La Mer The Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation [reviewed here] is my favourite foundation as it gives a soft-focus radiant finish to my face, is comfortable to wear and long-lasting to boot. I started out wearing it daily because I loved it so, and then towards the end I saved it only for special occasions. There are several other foundations that I love, but none compares to this. Of course, the fact that the shade Linen is a perfect match for me makes a huge difference as well.
  2. Cle de Peau Perfect Lash Mascara [reviewed here] is one of the best mascaras I’ve ever tried. It lengthens and defines in an elegant way without clumping nor weighing lashes down. I love that it doesn’t smudge on me, and is completely fuss-free, but the price (SGD73) makes me weep. Generally I don’t feel as strongly about mascaras as I do foundations, and at this price point there are excellent alternatives.
  3. Dior Diorshow Colour & Contour [reviewed here] was from the Spring 2016 collection, and since it is a cream formula, is technically expired and unsafe for use on eyes. However, I was quite fond of this Iris shade and had been carefully using it from time to time. Sadly though, the eyeshadow flew out of its pencil-shaped casing one day when I was opening it, landed on the floor and broke into pieces. So as fate wants it, the bin it is. This past year we’ve seen other pen-types eyeshadow products, some cream like this, others liquid. But in general, I think this particular Diorshow Colour & Contour formula is better, the pencil liner end was relatively budge-proof and the colour pairings are more to my liking. If Dior ever releases these again, I’d probably spring for one.
  4. It Cosmetics Vitality Lip Flush 4-in-1 Reviver Lipstick Stain is a lip balm that turns into a pretty lip stain according to your natural tones. I apply this as a lip treatment every morning before makeup, and it protects my lips from all the various kinds of products that I test out. Surprisingly, even with my daily swipes, this tube lasted me the entire year! Even on weekends, when I head out to the market bare-faced, this gives me a nice natural-looking pink lips without the need for lipsticks. I like the lightweight, non-greasy feel of this one, and it perfectly balances my lips’ needs for hydration.
  5. Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment is my 2nd tube this year, it is a staple and I always have 1 on my desk at work. I love that it soothes my lips and keeps them looking polished with a coat of colour. I appreciate very much that it comes with SPF15 protection, as my lips have a history of breaking out with cold sores at random and excess sun exposure is one of the triggers. It was surprising to me that there are not many lip products out there with sun protection, so ever since I discovered Fresh, I’ve always kept it on hand!

Skincare

Empties vol. 09 skincare

  1. Chanel Hydra Beauty Micro Cream [reviewed here] is hands-down my favourite moisturizer of the year! I don’t remember the last time I emptied a jar of moisturizer, so the fact that I accomplished this is a feat to crow about. The gel texture feels crisp and refreshing on the skin, and it keeps my skin well hydrated and plump all day, across all seasons. It is heavily scented as with the rest of the line, but I’ve had no problems with it despite my sensitive skin. In fact, I’m a huge fan of the entire Hydra Beauty range, so I would highly recommend it to anyone who suffers from dehydrated skin.
  2. Chanel Sublimage La Brume is an intense revitalizing mist from another of my favorite skincare ranges from Chanel. It is part of a 5-vial set and is every bit as precious as all the other Sublimage items. I initially bought it to help me with my additional travels, but loved it so much I took to spritzing the fine mist all over my face every day whenever I am feeling tired at work, or too hot after lunch. It does not affect my makeup, and it does not leave my skin feeling sticky. Instead, it cools me down, soothes my skin, rehydrates and leaves a soft glow. It is definitely a splurge, but there is no other mist that have been able to replace it in my arsenal.
  3. Estee Lauder New Dimension Neck & Chest Treatment [reviewed here] is one of the rare creams that my neck is able to tolerate without breaking out in itchy eczema. I enjoyed the silky cream and I found it helped to smooth out the many lines that I’ve developed over the years and also tone up my sagging jowl. It comes with a massaging tool but I’ve been too lazy to use it, though whenever I bother to I noticed a visible lifting effect.
  4. Tattoo The Deep Cleanse [reviewed here] was a recent find and immediately became one of my favourite cleansers. I love everything about it, from texture to scent, it is simply perfection. Despite having exfoliating beads inside and the harsh-sounding name, I found it to be very gentle on my sensitive dehydrated skin, and a pleasure to use on a daily basis. I already have several backups of this, so don’t be surprised to see this again in future empties posts. The only drawback about this product is the squeeze bottle that dispenses in giant dollops which is wasteful, and the brand logo fell out after a few squeezes. But otherwise, the product contained within is simply beautiful.
  5. Fresh Black Tea Kombucha Facial Treatment Essence [reviewed here] is the most lightweight of all the essences I’ve used / own, and to be honest I’m not fond of the smell which is somewhat vinegar-y. For my dehydrated skin, I’m also not sure if it really made a difference. I’ve also been trying to streamline my skincare routine, so watery essences in general no longer serve much of a purpose for me.
  6. La Mer Cleansing Micellar Water [reviewed here] cleanses incredibly well and yet still respectful of skin’s natural hydration barrier. I am generally not a fan of micellar water as most of them sting my skin and are not able to remove my heavy foundation completely. The reason I liked this La Mer is because it performs top-notch yet does not sting me. Having said that, I used it a couple of times to remove sunscreen and stage makeup (after his school performances) from my son’s face and he complained it stung. So, for those with extremely sensitive or irritated skin, I would recommend trying other oil or balm type of makeup removers.
  7. Cle de Peau Synactif Lotion was 1 of the products that I managed to rescue this year before they expired. This is from the brand’s prestigious range and contains exclusive ingredients to brighten, even out skin tone and hydrate skin. Thankfully, it is not as harsh as Essential Correcting Refiner [see here] which I abhorred, but I am still not a fan. The Synactif Soap [here] can be a rather stripping cleanser and I would not pair it with this Synactif Lotion as I find it insufficiently restorative. Instead, if you are looking for a lotion that helps to remove the final stubborn traces of makeup or grime after cleansing, or a lotion with gentle exfoliating action, then I will suggest you take a look at this. However, at the rich price point, I think there are many other alternatives one might consider.

Bodycare

Empties vol. 09 bodycare

Somehow as I was photographing these, I found myself arranging by colour theme rather than product segments, so there are actually 3 items here that should have been included in the previous skincare group.  They are:

  1. Bottega Verde Sol Protezione Siero Viso is an Italian brand formulated with natural ingredients. The high SPF50 drew me initially, and I also liked the pump packaging. However, this is so heavily scented that I could still smell it on my skin long after I step out of the house. It is also quite heavy in texture, so much so that I couldn’t bear to use it on my face. In the end, I applied it on my arms instead so as not to waste, but the heavy scent was appalling and I was immensely relieved when I was finally done.
  2. Tom Ford Face Protect is a permanent member of the Soleil line, and comes with broad spectrum SPF50 to protect your skin all year round. I love the simple, lightweight tube packaging which is perfect for traveling. The product itself is a lightweight cream which is just barely comfortable enough for layering with all my skincare and makeup during the hottest months. However, I found that I much preferred wearing it on my neck, opting for an even lighter more fluid type sunscreen for my face.
  3. Shu Uemura Ultime8 Sublime Cleansing Oil [reviewed here] is no stranger on this blog, and a staple in my daily routine. This particular bottle was a limited edition release from the Kye for Shu collaboration from 2016 [see here].

Back to body care proper…

  1. Clarins Body Fit is another returning staple. If you expect it to miraculously remove stubborn cellulite and fats, keep on dreaming. But now that I’ve stopped using it, I realise it does make a difference to my body shape! So, if I ever feel so inclined to shop for body shaping products again, this will certainly be the top of my list.
  2. Crabtree & Evelyn Venetian Violet Shower Gel is a recently released new scent. It is sufficiently light that it suits everyone in my household, including Ezra. Interestingly, it does not make too much foam, which some may prefer or miss depending on personal preferences. In general, I am always happy to receive and put to use Crabtree & Evelyn Shower Gels, and this was no exception.
  3. Crabtree & Evelyn Citron, Honey, Coriander Body Souffle is a very old seasonal release that I dug up and decided to put to use. The texture is more like a body cream than souffle, but the crisp scent made it more refreshing to use. I liked it for the evenings, before I go to bed in air conditioned interiors.
  4. Estee Lauder Re-Nutriv Intensive Smoothing Hand Creme is a luxurious hand cream that soothed my hands every night for over a year! My hands are prone to eczema from washing with detergent, and no other hand creams are able to soothe and protect my hands as well as this one. It absorbs like a dream too, unlike those heavy-duty commercial hand creams that feel like I had dipped my hands in wax. I absolutely love this Re-Nutriv hand cream and will repurchase soon.
  5. L’occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream is one of dozens lying in my stash and I have started putting 1 of these in every handbag and travel pouch I own just to make myself use some of them up. I never understood the mass appeal of these hand creams because they really pale in comparison to the likes of the Estee Lauder Re-Nutriv above. Of course, affordability is a huge factor, but it does nothing for my hands.

Haircare

Empties vol. 09 haircare

Finally, we are almost at the end of this post!   Just 4 hair products this time, although there were 2 others that I was hoping to have finished as well…

  1. Botanist Hair Treatment is a relatively new Japanese brand available at Sephora that is formulated with 90% natural plant-based ingredients. It comes in these huge 500ml bottles and are affordably priced to suit entire families. I also found the pump dispenser to be very convenient. As with most other mass market conditioners, I found this to be heavy on silicones.
  2. Goldwell Dual Senses Color Extra Rich Shampoo & Conditioner are the latest line extensions targeting dyed hair. Generally, I am a fan of Goldwell haircare products, and these were no exceptions. I like the gentle yet thorough shampoo that helped maintain my hair color, and the conditioner helped me detangle and kept my hair soft without weighing it down.
  3. Christophe Robin Hydrating Leave-in Mist with Aloe Vera is my 2nd encounter with the brand, but unfortunately more than half of the product spilled before I was able to put it to use. I sprayed it on my hair before blow-drying and found it great at detangling my hair. However, I found it somewhat heavy for a hair mist, leaving a tangible coating after my hair is thoroughly dry.

Looking back on my empties post, I am truly proud of the progress I had made at using up all the products that are cluttering up my home. Many of these are returning staples partly because I actually like and hence use them, and also a reflection of the continued support from the many brands and PRs that I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Along the way, I’ve also encountered some inconsistent brands and PRs, but I’ve since gone past the point of lamenting. For the coming year, I am resolved to live in the moment, enjoying what I have and holding less tightly onto the chase for more sponsorship. I still enjoy creating content though, but that may take the form of other things such as more lifestyle posts on instagram, and videos on youtube. I hope I don’t lose your friendship in this process, but trust that if and when I feel compelled to review something on this blog, it will be of interest to you. Meanwhile, if you would be so kind as to give a view/like/follow to my other channels, I would be eternally grateful!

Whatever your hopes and dreams may be for 2019, I pray that they will come true and may our good Father in heaven bless us all with great health and protect us in the days to come.

Sulwhasoo Sheer Lasting Foundation & Gel Cushion

There is a revolution afoot this spring, a whole new crop of foundations to herald in a beautiful complexion in keeping with the latest makeup trend.  Petal fresh skin has never been more alive and real, coverage is uncompromised by texture and comfort.  To kickstart this mini series is the latest cushion from Sulwhasoo and the brand’s first ever liquid foundation.

Sulwhasoo Sheer Lasting Cushion & Foundation

I was excited when I first spied the Sulwhasoo Sheer Lasting Foundation as this is the first liquid foundation from this brand.  Formulated with a new Sheer Hydra Formula Technology, this foundation adheres to skin all day for long-lasting wear, coupled with moisture to ensure comfort and a smooth finish.  As you might expect from a luxury skincare expert, the Sulwhasoo Sheer Lasting Foundation is formulated with sea buckthorn berries that is rich in antioxidants.  For full list of ingredients see here.

The coverage though sheer, is surprisingly good.  As you can see from the half-faced comparison shot above, Sulwhasoo Sheer Lasting Foundation is able to brighten my dark circles and conceal redness around my nose.  It evens out skin tone in general but a separate concealer is still needed to completely erase blemishes from sight.  There is a noticeable gleam to this foundation which is a matter of personal preference but may be tricky for those with oily skin.  The good thing though is that it does not get progressively oily-looking as the day progresses.  When used on its own, I do notice it breaking down slightly on my t-zone after about 8 hours of wear, but this can be resolved with a primer and some powder.

Sulwhasoo Sheer Lasting Foundation & Cushion

Released alongside the foundation is Sulwhasoo’s latest Sheer Lasting Gel Cushion.  I should mention at this point that I find the rose gold detailing on this pair of base makeup to be really pretty.  Sulwhasoo has many cushions, all of them excellent so I was hardpressed to get excited at first sight.  The gel cushion comes with a fine mesh over the product, and upon first dip of the puff, becomes fully ensconced within the melting gel.  When applied to the face, it bursts in a drench of hydration, and has a light crisp texture.  The application was seamless, very much my-skin-but-better whilst still providing great coverage as you can see below.

Sulwhasoo Sheer Lasting Cushion actually reminds me of Chanel’s Gel Touch Foundation [reviewed here] which is one of my personal favorite cushions for a natural finish.  In comparison, this one from Sulwhasoo has better coverage and lasts longer.  I found it lasts an entire day without transferring, and is able to control the appearance of oily shine.  Between the 2, I definitely prefer this cushion over the foundation.  In case you are interested in the ingredients, you may find the full list here.

Sulwhasoo Sheer Lasting Foundation and Cushion are out in counters now.  Please stop by and check them out for yourself!

Get a naturally glowing complexion with Guerlain L’Essentiel

Guerlain L'Essentiel FoundationGuerlain L'Essentiel Foundation

Guerlain makes some of my favourite foundations… they don’t boast an extensive range, but I’ve lived on and loved most of their formula.  There is a smoothness and refinement that is not commonly found in other makeup brands.  It has been many years since Guerlain last introduced a liquid foundation that is outside of their regular product lines so I was really excited to check out the new L’Essentiel!

Guerlain L'Essentiel Foundation

The most striking aspect of this new foundation is its unique shape.  Designed by Mathieu Lehanneur, the L’Essentiel bottle is composed of 2 spheres, the glass flacon and gilded top symbolize the perfect balance between 2 seemingly contradictory elements, makeup and skincare.  I was initially wary that such a bottle may not be too practical, but it turned out to be well balanced both on the vanity as well as in the hands.

Guerlain L’Essentiel is a foundation unlike any other as it not only gives the illusion of naturally perfect skin, it is actually made from 97% naturally-derived skin-loving ingredients that aim to protect and improve the quality of your skin with continued use.  Beauty-boosting ingredients such as white cocoa bean extract, and probiotic derivatives and prebiotics help to maintain skin’s natural balance, strengthen the cutaneous barrier, and boost hydration.  Tara and red algae gums allow the skin to breathe and protect it from the aging effects of pollution.

Guerlain LEssentiel Foundation

These beneficial effects are made all the more important since L’Essentiel has an impressive 16-hour wear time.  The texture is light and smooth, on par with the best Guerlain has ever offered.  It is easy to apply and blend, and provides light-medium slightly buildable coverage.  As you can see from the half-faced comparison shot below, L’Essentiel brightens and evens out my skin tone whilst maintaining allow my natural skin to show through.  It gives my skin a luminous glow which looks more healthy than oily, far less shiny than this foundation that I recently reviewed.  I’m using the shade 02N which is slightly lighter than my natural skin tone and looks much pinker than I like, 02W should be a better match.

One of the common complaints I’ve heard about Guerlain foundations in the past was the lack of shades, but this time L’Essentiel is being released with a whopping 30 shades!  There are C- cool/ N- neutral/ W- warm undertones, as well as a range of intensities from 00 to 06.

I don’t wear normally my foundations for 16 hours, but a minimum of 12 hours on a daily basis in a hot and humid climate.  Many brands claim long-lasting wear for their foundations, so I am usually sceptical and was pleasantly surprised to find Guerlain L’Essentiel actually survives my combination skin very well!  At the end of the day my makeup is still perfectly intact, perhaps a slight sheen may have escaped on my t-zone but nothing a simple blot can’t fix.  There is no fading, creasing  nor breaking down of the foundation.

Shu Uemura Unlimited FoundationShu Uemura Unlimited Foundation

Hello!  I was away in Beijing last week so was unable to work on new posts.  But I’m back, and eager to share with you the latest addition to the current miniseries on foundations.  Today, I’d like to feature the new Shu Uemura Unlimited Foundation!

Shu Uemura Unlimited Foundation

Shu Uemura is a makeup brand that I love and hold dear because it is formulated with Asians in mind, and designed for the everyday woman.  Their foundations are great value for money, and I’ve loved and emptied several bottles over the years.  The latest release – Unlimited, is a brand new launch that stands apart from all its other foundations [see here], and features breathable long-lasting wear.

Shu Uemura Unlimited Foundation

The bottle is an unusual cube shape (all other Shu Uemura foundations are cylindrical), and has a handy pump dispenser at the top.  The foundation is a lightweight fluid that is extremely fine and is a dream to blend.  Shu Uemura has developed a unique stretchable texture that holds pigments in place; and used sponge-like powders that absorb sebum and sweat to keep the foundation looking fresh all day long, even under hot humid climates.

Shu Uemura Unlimited Foundation has a natural semi-matte finish with a healthy luminosity.  Even the thinnest layer is able to effectively conceal dark circles and uneven skin tone.  With this new launch, Shu Uemura has offered 24 shades to suit a wide range of skin tones.  I am wearing the shade 664 which is one of the new shades and is a great match for my neck.  It is a beautiful foundation and one that I am wearing on a regular basis.  Of the 3 new liquid foundations that I’ve tried of late, Shu Uemura’s Unlimited is my favourite and I highly recommend you check it out!

Face off #1: Sisley Phyto-Teint Ultra Eclat Foundation

Sisley Phyto-Teint Ultra Eclat FoundationSisley Phyto-Teint Ultra Eclat Foundation

It has been a long time since I reviewed base makeup here on the blog, which is not to say I haven’t been trying new ones, but I was trying very hard to empty out my existing stash.  Towards the end, I did accumulate a few new foundations and have been putting them through their paces.  Since I am in a bit of a quiet period now before work and the baby ramps up, I thought I’d play a bit of catch-up with a 5-part mini-series on the foundations that I currently have on rotation.  To get things started, I am kicking off with the recently launched Sisley Phyto-Teint Ultra Eclat Foundation!

Sisley Phyto-Teint Ultra Eclat Foundation

I have not had the opportunity to review many Sisley Paris skincare or makeup products over the years, and I hope to remedy that this year.  Sisley has a small but growing range of makeup, and everything that I’ve encountered so far is incredibly luxurious and beautifully crafted.  Their latest Phyto-Teint Ultra Eclat Foundation is no exception, and I was personally blown away by how much I loved it at first try!

Designed with skincare properties, the Sisley Phyto-Teint Ultra Eclat is billed as a radiance boosting foundation that will progressively improve the complexion with continued use.  It contains buckwheat seed extract that protects skin from pollution and envrionmental damage; and mallow and gardenia flower extracts to moisturize and soften skin.  Full list of ingredients may be found here.

Sisley Phyto Teint Ultra Eclat foundation effects**Please click on image to open in a new window to zoom

The foundation has a very lightweight fluid texture that applies like a dream, and goes to work covering up blemishes and smoothening any unevenness right away.  It has a medium coverage which is further lightened when applied with a damp sponge, but is sufficient to lighten my dark circles though a separate concealer is still needed for scars.  I love the velvety finish which does not accentuate my lines and dry skin, yet still giving my complexion a natural luminosity.  I wear the shade Ivory which is a perfect match, and it lasts me all day without oxidizing nor fading.

Sisley Phyto-Teint Ultra Eclat Foundation was love at first application for me… and that does not happen very often.  I enjoyed every aspect of it, from the relatively small and handy bottle (still contains the industry standard 30ml) to the texture and finish.  If you have matured skin, or are battling dryness this time of the year, or are just looking for something super flattering without too much shine, I highly recommend you check this out!
